Founded in 1949, the business was called "Hagen & Lindquist." The founders of this business started out selling New Idea farm equipment and Oldsmobile cars. Vern Johnson bought out Hagen in 1950. The name of the business then changed to "Johnson & Lindquist." They continued to sell New Idea farm equipment and Oldsmobile cars.

In 1957, Vern Johnson bought out Mr Lindquist and changed the dealership name to Vern Johnson Motors (VJM). Vern Johnson added Johnson outboard motors and Crestliner boats to the car and farm equipment inventory.

In 1958, Vern Johnson Motors took on Rambler (which later became American Motors). A year later Vern Johnson bought out "U.C. Hoppe-Pontiac." Adding to the marine line in 1970, Vern Johnson bought franchises for Lund Boats and Glastron boats. In 1972 Vern Johnson decided to discontinue business with American Motors.

In 1994 more changes occurred. VJM sold out of the marine business, discontinuing Lund boats, Johnson motors, and various trailer suppliers. After selling out of the marine business, Dick Johnson (Vern Johnson's son) began to expand the automotive business through increased volume of program and off lease vehicles purchased through General Motors. As part of the expanding automobile business Dick and Vern added the Aurora franchise. This franchise will allow Vern Johnson Motors to sell and service this luxury sport-touring car line.

Facilities: The main building, built in 1949, has been renovated inside. The service area has remained nearly the same, except for the modern computer and service equipment necessary to diagnose and repair late model cars. In 1972, a display building was constructed. This display building provided a backdrop for the car lot as well as sheltering 25 vehicles. The large glass windows of the display building provide a warm, dry, well lighted setting for potential customers to browse.

The body shop and storage facilities were originally built in 1980. In 1985, an overflow storage building was constructed about 2 1/2 miles from the central location of VJM. This building is used for storing additional stock and provides an additional outlet for potential customers to VJM's products on Highway 55. In 1999 the body shop was expanded an a state of the art paint booth with make up air and bake cycle were added.
